The Legacy (Ballroom), 1500 14th Street, Lubbock

You’re invited to attend “Road to a Better South Plains”, an event highlighting the challenges Texas’ working poor face in their quest to become financially independent.  The agenda will include:

  • 9:30 – 10:00 a.m. – Networking Opportunity!

  • a preview of “A Fighting Chance: What does it take for a family to survive and thrive in Texas?” This documentary follows the lives of five struggling Texas families and shows the tough, sometimes complicated choices they must make to meet their most basic needs. The realities of poverty and the working poor are exposed in this film, and common assumptions are challenged about what it really takes for many people to survive.

  • a presentation by the Center for Public Policy Priorities (CPPP) which will include:

    • information on how our region compares to others in Texas on the “Opportunity Scale”; and

    • CPPP’s Better Family Budget Calculator, an online resource that estimates what it takes for families to make ends meet in each of Texas’ 26 Metro Areas. Learn more about the latest tools and data you can access to support your clients in working towards greater self-sufficiency.

  • a panel discussion featuring local leaders whose focus is on meeting the needs of the South Plains’ working poor in the areas of housing, food, child care, health care, and education.
